There was a time when millennials dominated popular culture. Fast forward to today—this stings to write, but someone asked in r/Millennials, "What millennial trend are you glad is over?" People weighed in on the issues that marked a coming-of-age era for so many of us. Here's what they said.
1. "Being blamed for dying industries and traditions."
2. "Remember the duckface? That."
3. "Graphic tees from Ed Hardy and Affliction." I know they're still around, but they're noticeably underrepresented in popular society now."
4. "'Awkwaaard…' after any sentence even mildly abnormal. The people who did that were so fucking annoying."
5. "Chevron stripes and burlap."
6. "Use concealer as lipstick and refuse to mix their makeup to match their skin tone. I had a friend who did that all the time. Along with removing their brows almost to nothing."
7. "Bacon everything." Bacon is excellent, but it does not belong on everything, and it can overshadow a dish if you use too much of it. Bacon toothpaste was a big step too far.
8. "For me, open-toed boots. Everywhere, open-toed boots were for sale. I'd see a lovely boot and be annoyed that it was open-toed. So unrealistic. Oh, and peplum tops. "Who looked good wearing those?"
9. Skinny jeans. They were like leg prisons. I despised them and would spend ages looking for the most relaxed fit that retailers offered. It feels like a war has ended now that they aren't the norm."
10. "There was a period around 2009 when Justin Bieber haircuts were really popular. Glad that's over."
11. "The rise of the Manic Pixie Dream Girl trope. Really annoying, damaging, and low-effort."
12. "'I did a thing.'"
13. "Mustache everything."
14. "When the mainstream media found out about memes."
15. "Unnecessary mason jars."
16. "Does millennial gray qualify? I’m done with that."
17. "Drinking yourself blackout drunk every weekend."
18. "The hypebeast trend was insufferable."
19. "Ultra low-cut jeans."
20. "Fedoras."
21. "Man buns, ukuleles, flannel shirts, beards, and fake eyeglasses. So, basically hipster fashion. (The music was great tho.)"
22. "They attempted to come after us for avocados and phone use. It is gibberish. Avocados are tasty, and cellphones are awesome. "That is not our fault."
23. And lastly, "Saying 'first' on new posts and articles down in the comment section."
Lol, what a trip down memory lane! Anyone want to write 'first' just for nostalgia's sake? Any millennial trends you'd like to add? Let us know in the comments or the anonymous form!
